I am also interested in
partnering with web designers.
What do I do?
I am a
Web Architect.
- I approach Web businesses from a holistic point of view.
- I help you set and achieve specific business goals.
- I sidestep myths and trends and determine what actually needs to be built.
- I organize websites so that it is easier for users to business with you.
- Sometimes I create specifications for other designers and developers to implement.
Sometimes I act as the project manager for the project.
And sometimes I do the implementation myself.
I am not married to any particular practices, technologies or techniques. If
I recommend search engine optimization or starting a blog, it's because that's
what's appropriate for your website, not because it's a hot trend right now.
As for qualifications, I have 11 years of experience in Web usability, information
architecture, design, software development, and being a one-man Web business.
I developed Worldisround and have been running
it single-handed since 2000, and I am starting another company,
Animist, for helping busy people get organized.
What makes a good website?
Every good website has a central idea or concept which:
- is simple. It can be clearly summarized in the space of one breath.
- is unique. It is intrinsically tied to the identity of this website and it cannot
be replicated.
- informs and affects every aspect of the website. Like a hologram, every piece is a reflection
of the whole.
The architectural term for this core concept is a parti. It is the keystone
to creating an elegant website, without which you are floundering in the dark,
grasping at tactics without strategy, at trends without vision, gambling instead of
manifesting.
Project scope
Every project is different:
- Some people are just starting (or re-starting) a Web-based business and need a complete website.
- Some people have a website, but it just isn't bringing in any business and they want help finding out what the next step is.
- Some people are unhappy with the designer that they hired, and they're looking for someone reliable to fix the site.
- Some people know exactly what they want and they're looking for an expert to execute their plan.
E.g. a site overhaul, a formal usability review, custom software development, or implementation (HTML, CSS, Javascript, etc.) of a finished design spec.
Everyone's business and situation is unique, and so is every project.
Most projects take the form of a fixed-price contract project
(typically ranging from $1000 to $10,000), but I am also open to different ways to
structure my work (e.g. regular consultations, retainer, webmaster services, and even partnerships.)
